Emerging songwriter Emmy The Great is working on new material inspired by Shakespeare.

Hailing from London, Emmy The Great was part of a new breed of songwriter. Close friends with the likes of Jeremy Warmsley, their small circle of musicians has produced a wealth of original material.

Debut album 'First Love' shows that Emmy The Great still had a lot of growing up to do. Undoubtedly talented, the intimacy of the singer's live shows was stripped away for a record which was full of promise.

Still touring heavily, the singer has completed more than a dozen songs for her second album. Currently putting the finishing touches to the material, Depeche Mode producer Gareth Jones has been recruited to helm the sessions.

Speaking to the NME, Emmy The Great explained that the new material is deeply inspired by literature. Alongside this, however, the London songwriter has delved into her own personal life for some sweet and tender new tracks.

"After I wrote the last album, I felt terrible about having to sing songs about someone I knew so blatantly," she told NME. "So I tried to write this record based entirely on imaginary situations. Unfortunately it didn't end up being imaginary in the end because most of the songs are about me."

Continuing, the singer revealed that the album is split into two halves. "The first half of the album is about impending doom and the second half is about dealing with the aftermath."

Emmy The Great's new album is slated to appear in February 2011, with the song 'Exit Night' apparently inspired by Shakespeare. "That's the only song where I wrote about an actual imaginary situation," she said.

"It is sang from the point of view of someone reading Romeo And Juliet at a window and a page disappears. Then Juliet comes back for the page and for her life."

However it's not all high brow, with one track being named 'Dinosaur Sex'. "Someone just said it out loud once and it made me laugh. The point of the song is, 'What did it do?' It did absolutely fuck all for them did it?"

Emmy The Great's new album is due to be released in February.
