American grunge rockers Soundgarden are to release their new retrospective 'Telephantasm' on September 27th.
The times they are a-changing. In the 21st century it seems that its no longer enough to release an album, bands have to think about cross platform synergies and social networking tie ins.
Soundgarden were one of American rock music's most successful exports during the 90s, with their traditional rock bluster mixing with the grunge boom. Hailing from Seattle, the band split as the Millennium dawned.
Reforming last year, Soundgarden have now unveiled plans for a special retrospective. Due for release on September 27th 'Telephantasm' collects the band's best known tracks alongside some unreleased material.
Recorded for the 'Badmotorfinger' album the long lost track 'Black Rain' now takes pride of place alongside some hugely successful singles.
Moving from Sub Pop to a major label, Soundgarden in many ways traced the rise and decline of the grunge movement. Now the band are set for another first, after agreeing to release the album in batches with 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock'.
The bundle will be available for just one week, before being withdrawn. Soundgarden have also confirmed plans for a double disc version of 'Telephantasm' with 12 additional tracks, 5 of which have never been released before.
Meanwhile, a DVD version of the album will be also be released alongside a Super Deluxe Collector's Edition containing more unreleased material. All three expanded editions will be available online and in stores.
