Track Of The Day 5/8 - Bonobo

Whatever happened to trip hop?

In the 90s, the likes of One Dove, Portishead and more emerged mixing down tempo electronica with something decidedly soulful. Yet somehow the tag has fallen out of use, despite leaving a trail of wonderful records.

Signed to Ninja Tune, Bonobo is definitely making trip hop. With a firm background in electronica his eclectic samples reach towards the world of jazz and soul. Returning with his new album 'Black Sands' the producer seemed to strike a chord with fans.

His most potent album yet, 'Black Sands' was a bewildering mixture of old and new. Definitely aimed at the dancefloor, it was a defiantly forward thinking album yet still bore traces of trip hop's lost genre.

Bonobo is set to play The Big Chill, which kicks off tonight (August 5th). A wonderfully expansive live performer, DJ Simon Green is joined by a loose knit collective to bring his productions to the public.

To celebrate, ClashMusic has grabbed a special new remix. Grasscut Bitter Peace have taken on 'The Keeper' from Bonobo's recent album, pulling it to pieces before sticking it back together again.

A remarkable re-working on the band's spiralling acid grooves, you can grab it for free as a salute to The Big Chill.
