Returning New York punk-funk outfit !!! are streaming their new album 'Strange Weather, Isn't It?'.
!!! are almost tribal. The band's pounding rhythms give way to layers of guitars, bringing the post-punk template right up to date across the series of groundbreaking albums. Sadly losing drummer Jerry Fuchs, the group vowed to carry on and have completed some sensational new material.
Due for release through Warp Records, 'Strange Weather, Isn't It?' has already gathered a clutch of warm reviews. The album is a colourful return, led by new single 'The Most Certain Sure' which is out today (August 16th).
With their imagination bordering on hallucinogenic bursts of inspiration, it comes as no surprise to learn that !!! singer Nic Offers is an experienced LSD user.
Speaking to Pitchfork, the frontman explained that he would listen to entire albums dosed up on acid. "That same trip, I remember we listened to Jimi Hendrix, the beginning of 'Electric Ladyland'. We also listened to Last Poets. We listened to Nick Cave. We were huge on the Smiths on acid. That's when I came back to the Smiths again. 'Meat Is Murder' - that whole album was just huge to us."
"It was the early 90s, so we'd definitely listen to stuff like Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth. That was where it all changed for me" he continued. "On one acid trip, I'd just plugged in my stereo after moving it out of my roommate's place, not having used it. I plugged it in and opened the CD, and it was CD that didn't have anything written on it; it was just a trippy design. I didn't know what it was, and I was just like, "Fuck it." I put it in, and it was (Sonic Youth's) 'Bad Moon Rising'. I had never listened to that before, and that was like-- I mean, I listened to that like five times that trip. That was absolutely another life-changing moment."
Note: ClashMusic does not recommend listening to music on Acid. However you can check out the results of these sonic experiments by listening to !!!'s new album. The band have made it available on their MySpace page - stream it now HERE.
