Snow Patrol have topped a new chart to find the most played track of the past decade.

The growth of the internet has threatened the security of radio stations, with pirates able to take their shows online. Potentially winning an enormous audience, these new contenders have changed the way we listen to the radio.

However there's still something to be said for switching the dial and finding your favourite show. A new poll by the PRS is seeking to find the most played song on UK radio over the past decade, and has thrown up some surprising results.

Topping the new poll are Northern Irish indie types Snow Patrol. Breaking through to the mainstream with their single 'Run' it is the band's hugely popular track 'Chasing Cars' which tops the new poll.

A highlight of their live show, 'Chasing Cars' is apparently the most played track of the Noughties on British radio. The band top a varied list which contains new acts and some old favourites.

Razorlight sit second, with their single 'America' beating off competition. The Noisettes come third, with their single 'Don't Upset The Rhythm' demonstrating renewed popularity after the band discovered electro.

Other high entries come courtesy of The Killers, with their early single 'Somebody Told Me'. Meanwhile, classic acts such as Queen also appear demonstrating their continuing popularity.

'Don't Stop Me Now' is a perennial radio classic, with Queen apparently securing the fourth most popular track on British radio. Other entries come courtesy of The Cars, Free and Stereophonics with Coldplay seeing out the Top Ten.

Despite their enormous commercial success Coldplay only have one track on the list, with piano led anthem 'Clocks' sitting at number ten.

Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS for Music, said: “Traffic jams are stressful at the best of times, but at the Bank holiday, they can be really bad and this can affect our mood accordingly. However, the right song on the radio can help us to unwind and alleviate the buildup of stress. Driving songs are generally up-beat, often with a hint of nostalgia, so they can be fantastic stress busters.”

The entire Top Ten is as follows:

1. Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
2. America – Razorlight
3. Don’t Upset The Rhythm – The Noisettes
4. Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen
5. All Right Now - Free
6. Drive – The Cars
7. Somebody Told Me – The Killers
8. I Like The Way (You Move) – Body Rockers
9. Dakota - Stereophonics
10. Clocks - Coldplay
