Post-punk legends Vic Godard & The Subway Sect have unveiled details of their new album 'We Come As Aliens'.
Vic Godard is one of the great lost talents of the post punk era. His group The Subway Sect were hugely influential, inspiring groups such as Orange Juice by adding a deeply un-macho sensibility to the punk template.
An association with Bernie Rhodes brought the band further attention, but label rows sidelined The Subway Sect. The band's single 'Ambition' failed to hit the charts, but became an anthem amongst new groups.
The Jesus And Mary Chain covered the track, keeping Vic Godard's reputation alive. Now revered as an important songwriter, The Subway Sect are set to return with a new album.
Typically outlandish, 'We Came As Aliens' is due to be released on October 11th. The singer's first batch of new material since 2002's 'Sansend' the album finds The Subway Sect on experimental form.
Issuing a statement, Vic Godard explained that material from the new album has been in gestation for over a decade.
"Rebellion Festival Blackpool – the Sect enter the Winter Gardens and the title We Come as Aliens is born."
"The songs from the album have been evolving since the mid 1990s, with the exception of Francoise Hardy’s Et Meme, which I have wanted to record since ’77. Some of the tracks have been included in live sets over the years with the various Sects, the oldest being Ne’er which I used to do when Bitter Springs were masquerading as Subway Sect. Takeover, Best Album, Et Meme and That Train have been part of the live set for a while now."
"A couple of years ago I recorded a demo of Et Meme and That Train with the Wet Dog Sect, but nothing came of it, but when I had Mark, Kev and Gary on board I knew I had the group to record the album."
"There are a variety of musical influences on WCAA, including Latin American (Same Plan), Northern Soul (Best Album), R’n’B (Life in the Distance) and Punk, whereas Music of a Werewolf is a step outside what I’ve done before."
Vic Godard & Subway Sect are due to release 'We Come As Aliens' on October 11th.
