Glaswegian producer Rustie has claimed that computer games are deeply influential on his sound.
Dubstep is a broad church. Fusing itself with hip hop, the Glaswegian scene has given birth to some unusual producers. Rustie first came to prominence with some inventive remixes, displaying a bizarre array of sounds.
Signed to Warp, Rustie's new EP 'Sunburst' recalls everything from G-Funk to prog, with plenty of guitar lines on shows. However in a new interview the Glaswegian beatsmith has admitted that computer games are a huge influence.
Well those 8-Bit squeals had to come from somewhere. Speaking to FACT the producer explained where the track 'Beast Nite' comes from. Taken from his forthcoming EP, the song "is kinda inspired by the game 'Golden Axe'. I'm not really writing about anything when I make music, I think music communicates its own message to emotions and the soul bypassing the writer to a certain extent especially when there are no lyrics.”
Elsewhere, Rustie admitted that 'Sunburst' has a dual meaning, with the cover acting as a tribute to computer game franchise Zelda. “I named it after my Les Paul Sunburst (guitar) used on the record. Yeah, you’re dead right about Zelda. Ocarina of Time is my favourite game ever ever ever.”
The EP was launched last Friday (October 1st) at CAMP in London. A renowned DJ as well as a producer, Rustie was backed with performances from Jam City, Untold and Harmonic 313.
As a special gift to fans, Rustie has made his mix from Barcelona's Sonar festival available as a free download. Featuring the Glaswegian turntablist in full flight you can grab it HERE.
