Soul music legend Solomon Burke has passed away at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport on route to a gig in the city. He was 70 years old.
The larger than life singer, the self-proclaimed King of Rock & Soul, leaves 21 children and 90 grandchildren and was still recording and releasing music up until his death, winning a Grammy in 2004, performing from a throne at 2008's Glastonbury Festival and releasing the album 'Nothing's Impossible' earlier this year.
He began his performing career as a preacher and gospel singer before signing to Atlantic Records and co-writing and recording his signature song 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love'.
His final album 'Hold on Tight', recorded with Dutch rock band De Dijk, is due to be released in October.
