Jaime Winstone’s new film Made In Dagenham is being tipped for great things. Winstone is integral to a stellar cast that also includes Sally Hawkins and Geraldine James.
It follows the true story of a group of female machinists employed at Ford’s Dagenham plant who strike when their job is classified as being unskilled. Despite events snowballing to the creation of 1970’s Equal Pay Act, the women’s story seemed to have disappeared into history - until now.
“I knew about Dagenham Motors because my Nan was actually a machinist there way back in the day, but I wasn’t aware of what had happened there,” agrees Winstone. “But when I read the script I was really empowered to dig further.”
Initially more interested in fashion, Winstone’s character, Sandra, progresses to become a key part of the group. “I wanted to know why she got involved. It’s because she’s part of their spirit,” asserts Winstone. “You really feel that bond when you watch it.”
The use of Sixties fashion is a vital part of film. As she explains, “These women were going to the factory in Dagenham. They weren’t going to an amazing event. It was a demanding job in sweaty conditions but they always looked pristine.”
On a personal level, the film also provided a chance for Winstone to move from independent films to major features. “And to not do it by chasing zombies!” she laughs self-deprecatingly, in reference to her role in Charlie Brooker’s TV horror series Dead Set.
