Reggae icon Gregory Isaacs has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Entering the Jamaican music scene when still in his teens, Gregory Isaacs took his time getting established. Working with a variety of labels the singer gained invaluable experience, working on a raft of different projects.

Coming of age in the era of Roots Reggae, Gregory Isaacs favoured something lighter, more soulful. The singer's cuts became hugely popular in the UK, helping to spark the Lovers Rock genre.

A smoother take on reggae, the success of Lovers Rock saw Gregory Isaacs move to the UK. Signing with the Virgin Records imprint Front Line, the singer was tipped for potential stardom in Britain and the United States.

However it was not to be. Despite recording some of his best work with Front Line the singer was denied extensive success, and drug problem saw his touring activities dwindle away to nothing.

Battling drug abuse for two decades, Gregory Isaacs eventually lost most of his teeth as his health began to decline. Battling back, the Jamaican singer kicked his habit and began recording again.

Diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year, the illness then spread across his body, reports the BBC. Entering hospital, Gregory Isaacs sadly passed away at his home in London this morning (October 26th).

Perhaps best known for the hit 'Night Nurse' Gregory Isaacs is a pivotal figure in the development of reggae.

Amongst those paying tribute to the singer is Dancehall heroine Lady Chann, who wrote on her Twitter: "RIP to a great Reggae legend who passed over today. Greggory Issac... Salute to u. Xx xx"
