M.I.A. has teamed up with The Specials for a one off run through a reggae classic.
It's not been the best of years for M.I.A. The Sri Lankan born singer returned with her new album 'MAYA' and was met by some degree of indifference and - in one case, at least - outright hostility.
An infamous article in the New York Times sought to puncture M.I.A.'s allure of cool, and resulted in outrage from the singer. The row trundled on throughout the summer, with the outspoken artist eventually receiving a slender apology.
Now focussing on getting her music heard, M.I.A. is preparing to release a cover of 'It Takes A Muscle' by Spectral Display. A reggae classic, its infectious rhythm is matched by a inescapable Caribbean melody.
Her biggest hit since 'Paper Planes'? Perhaps. Arriving to perform on 'Later... With Jools Holland' the singer had a surprise up her sleeve. M.I.A. hooked up with The Specials, who provided a nimble backing on a run through 'It Takes A Muscle'.
The one off performance saw two generations united, with both M.I.A. and The Specials influenced by Caribbean bass music - albeit years apart. An appropriate conversation, the Sri Lankan singer doesn't seem to pleased with the result, grimacing throughout the performance.
Meanwhile, M.I.A. is set to complete a series of British tour dates. The singer has arranged a short burst of performances, including a performance at Manchester's Warehouse Project as part of the Annie Mac presents tour.
Joining a line up which includes a DJ set from Rusko, as well as an appearance from Radio 1 star Annie Mac herself.
Watch M.I.A.'s performance on 'Later... With Jools Holland' this Friday (November 5th).
