The xx have been chosen to switch on the Christmas lights in Putney, London next month.

Meeting at high school, The xx are the latest musical luminaries to emerge from Putney. The band shared the same music teacher as members of Hot Chip and influential producers Four Tet and Burial.

Releasing their debut album in 2009, The xx have enjoyed enormous success. Winning the Mercury Music Prize in some style earlier this year, the London trio will see out the year in unusual fashion.

The xx have been chosen to switch on the Christmas lights in Putney. The ceremony takes place next month, and will see the famously glum band become the focus of the festive celebrations.

Putney has a Christmas market, which runs throughout December. The switching on of the lights takes place on December 3rd, close to the band's alma mater of nearby Elliot High School.

Sadly, The xx won't be playing live. The trio will switch on the lights but music will be provided by local group fiN. Elsewhere, revellers will be kept entertained by a bouncy castle, a carousel and a 33 foot Christmas tree.

Other areas of London have had rather less credible musicians turn on their lights. In Westfield Shopping Centre pop star Rihanna did the honours while Old Spitalfields Market was visited by Olly Murs.

Outside the capital, Christmas revellers in Cardiff will be joined by current Doctor Who star Matt Smith while festive fans in Blackpool can enjoy the company of last year's X Factor winner Joe McElderry.
