Bjork Environmental Row

Bjork has entered the debate over Iceland's natural resources, with controversial consequences.

Bjork is simply a one off, a passionate and sensitive songwriter with deep roots in both music and visual art. Recently, though, the Icelandic singer has spent time campaigning to protect the Icelandic landscape.

The Scandinavian nation is suffering from the effects of the banking crisis, which could open up previously protected areas to energy companies.

In a recent interview Bjork spoke out against Canadian company Magma, claiming that the organisation has exaggerated the volume of power which could be extracted from geothermal resources.

After this, Magma threatened to sure the Canadian magazine MacLean's who were responsible for the article. Speaking to Pitchfork, the Icelandic singer mused on the reasons for Magma's defensive approach.

"I said there were rumors that Ross Beaty's other company, Pan American Silver, had broken humanitarian, union, and environmental rights/laws in South America. Maclean's said they couldn't keep it on their website unless it had been proven in court" she explained.

"My gut feeling, though, is that the real reason Ross threatened to sue was because, in the interview, I corrected two things he has not been telling the truth about in the foreign press, things the Icelandic people know and the Icelandic media write about differently. He has said that geothermal energy lasts for a thousand years and that his company has access to 400 megawatts in Iceland. This is not true. With the sort of methods they use it will probably last around 50 years and he only has access to about 150 megawatts."

Last year Bjork helped organise a massive concert in Reykjavik to raise awareness of the threats facing the environment in Iceland. With such concerns, the singer's music could become influenced by the campaign.

"My last album Volta was about justice and I guess I was insisting on it at the same time. It is hard for me to say while I am in the middle of it but it is impossible for me to just stick gum in my ears and blindfold myself while finishing my new album" she explained. "There is a revolution going on in Iceland right now. So I guess all these things are affecting each other somehow."
