French producer Mr Oizo is set to re-issue his long lost second album 'Moustache (Half A Scissor)' on Brainfeeder.
An emerging house producer, Mr Oizo agreed to license his throwaway track 'Flat Beat' to Levis. Suddenly, though, the commercial became a phenomenon and the producer was defined by a single track only one album into his career.
Breaking away from this, Mr Oizo ditched his analogue equipment and started worked on his programming. Using a computer for the first time, the French dance don attached his highly detailed production style to new technology.
The result was 'Moustache (Half A Scissor)'. Immediately alienating his new-found fan base, the album was an incredible programming feat and won the French producer respect amongst his fellow musicians.
Now out of print, 'Moustache (Half A Scissor)' is becoming a cult item after namechecks from some important figures. Now Flying Lotus has stepped in to re-issue the album on his own Brainfeeder imprint in a limited edition of 1000.
The original label that put it out thought it was unlistenable at the time, they didn't quite believe in it, but it was way ahead of its time" he said. "It’s an honour for Brainfeeder to re-release this record, it's one of the most inspiring electronic records ever made.”
Meanwhile, Mr Oizo himself has come to look upon the album fondly. Regretting some stylistic choices, the French producer nonetheless stands behind the music despite its formidable reputation.
“I think 76% of this record is very inspired,” he explained. “The rest is terrible and not really interesting... But hey, 76% is a good score.”
