Kansas City group The Get Up Kids are offering fans a free preview from their forthcoming album.
Founded in the mid 90s, The Get Up Kids went on to have a massive influence on American rock music. Emo at a time when 'emo' was still vaguely credible, their mixture of crunching guitars and sensitive songwriting struck a chord.
Inspiring groups across the United States and beyond, The Get Up Kids somehow managed to avoid the enormous success they were surely destined for.
Going on hiatus in 2005, the band embarked on a series of different projects. The Get Up Kids remained a memory, until a chance encounter last year led to the band deciding to get back together again.
Working on new material, The Get Up Kids are set to release 'There Are Rules' in February. Inspired after rehearsals to promote the tenth anniversary edition of their breakout album ‘Something to Write Home About’, the album returns to their early, raw style.
Aiming for a live sound, the band recorded onto analogue 2" tape. Recording onto a reel to reel tape, The Get Up Kids have managed to capture their live sound with a more mature songwriting outlook.
“This record came together really organically. We'd throw out an idea and if it didn't work after 30 minutes we'd scrap it and move on to another one. We all wrote together really spontaneously and then fleshed it out with Ed in the studio," says Matt Pryor.
Forming their own label to handle the release, The Get Up Kids are going completely independent. "We had a really great relationship with Vagrant but we felt that with the proverbial rebirth of the band we wanted to start our own label. Do everything ourselves like we did in the beginning."
The Get Up Kids are due to release 'There Are Rules' on February 28th. Grab a free preview below...
