Elbow singer Guy Garvey has revealed that their new album harks back to their early material.
Now one of the best loved groups in the UK, Elbow's forthcoming album is surrounded by expectation. Following on from the emotional triumph of 'The Seldom Seen Kid' the new material has to pleased a massively expanded fan-base.
Recorded in sessions last year, 'Build A Rocket Boys!' is due to be released later this year. In previous interviews, Guy Garvey has described the sound as being appropriate to the massive venues they now play.
However speaking to XFM recently, the frontman backtracked. Probed about the new album, Guy Garvey explained that it sounded a lot closer to debut album 'Asleep In The Back' than later material.
Speaking to the broadcaster Guy Garvey said "there's perhaps some more big positive moments than there are on 'Asleep in the Back,' but other than that vibe-wise it's a lot groovier than anything we've done in the last couple of years."
Released back in 2001, 'Asleep In The Back' was an enormous critical success which broke into the Top 20. Continuing, the singer argued that putting aside the achievement of 'The Seldom Seen Kid' proved to be difficult.
"To do something self-indulgent and inaccessible would have been a bit churlish. We write music for people to hear and we really enjoy these big show that we're doing now -- we can't wait to get out on the road in March, we couldn't help but bear that in mind with certain songs on the album."
