House was disco's revenge.
So said Chicago DJ Frankie Knuckles, a man who knows a thing or two about the evolution of house. After their debut album was adopted by the nu-disco scene, Hercules & Love Affair decided to have their revenge as well.
Working on 'Blue Songs' the collective quickly became a multi-national affair. Andy Butler remained at the helm, but a new crew soon emerged after the departure of twin vocalists Antony and Nomi.
Recorded in the United States and Europe, 'Blue Songs' is an edgy, house driven return. Hercules & Love Affair have stripped the beats back, with the songs having a direct, at times almost angry tone.
Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke is amongst the guest stars, dropping by a studio in New York to record his part. Adding his clipped post-punk tones to the record, the result is a diverse return from Hercules & Love Affair.
Andy Butler spoke to ClashMusic about the making of the album, enthusing about the variety of projects he has undertaken. With material due under the Mr Intl moniker, the producer is keen to keep busy.
