I Am Kloot Live Review - Shepherds Bush Empire, London

Providing the main support for this evening, Steve Mason cherry picks some of the best cuts from his debut solo record. After a carnival-style rhythmic finale, his rather impressive half-hour set ends and has clearly won over those who bothered to watch.

Playing on a rowdy Friday night is a difficult gig for the genteel I Am Kloot. Lead singer John Bramwell quietly and politely wishes that those by the bar were more silent during the second half of the gig, which is just shy of two hours in length.

Continuing their batch of UK dates post-Mercury Prize nomination for fifth LP Sky At Night, the band mix material new and old, covering subjects as diverse as drinking, disaster and television. Older cuts like 'Gods And Monsters' and 'Over My Shoulder', mix well with newer songs like 'Northern Skies' and 'Radiation', the latter being the ideal closer.

Or so you would think. Despite the band's eagerness to cover as much from their back catalogue as possible, it's all a bit too much, especially since their encore is only one song long, compared to the twenty-two or so songs that preceded it.

That aside, their performance is solid. And when they are flanked by extra musicians for some of their newer material, they are at their most enthralling and engrossing. It might have dragged a little, but you can forgive them for being so eager to please.
