George Shearing Passes Away

British born jazz legend George Shearing has passed away following heart failure at the age of 91.

Born in London, George Shearing came from a working class background. Blind from a young age, the child was nonetheless a natural musician and soon began performing at local pubs in the area.

Turning down offers of music scholarships, George Shearing soon became a sensation on the British jazz scene. Working with foreign musicians exposed him to new sounds, which mixed with his classical leanings.

Moving to the United States in 1947, Shearing's inventive take on jazz made him stand apart from the post be bop milieu. His melodic style presaged the innovations of cool jazz, with the influence of Debussy showing through.

Scoring several massive pop hits the pianist also composed 'Lullaby Of Birdland' which became one of the hallmarks of the modern jazz era. Embracing new instruments, George Shearing gave prominent places to the guitar and vibraphone - then underused in jazz music.

Best known for his Quintet, George Shearing became a naturalised citizen of the United States in 1956. The group lasted for two decades, until the pianist began to tire of the restrictions the format placed on him.

Remaining an inventive and melodic musician, George Shearing spent his twilight years working on a number of collaborations. Recording an album with French musician Stephane Grapelli, a pairing with Mel Torme would win the pair two Grammy awards.

Awarded a knighthood in recognition of his British roots, George Shearing won numerous accolades during his career. Performing for three United States Presidents, the pianist composed over 300 songs during his lifetime.

Passing away yesterday (February 14th) due to heart failure, George Shearing is survived by his wife, Eleanor, and daughter, Wendy Ann.
