After more than a decade producing some scorched-earth guitar music, you could be forgiven for expecting Mogwai to take time off.
But no. The Glasgow group are pressing on, launching new projects and carefully curating releases for their record label Rock Action. Fresh from the live project 'Strange Moves' last year Mogwai are set to return with a new album.
Going back to where they began, the group returned to the Chem19 facility. The place where 'Young Team' was laid down over a decade ago, the result is a rejuvenated set from the much loved group.
Out now, 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' is an appropriately aggressive release. Very immediate, the album comes packed with ideas which expand on the group's ear-shredding quiet-LOUD template.
Elements of Krautrock wash by, with the record containing some genuinely beautiful moments. Sure, for long term fans 'Hardcore...' will have to endure being compared to older, more established works but as a document of a time and place in their career it is difficult to match.
