Soul icon Marvin Gaye is set to be the subject of a new biopic directed by Julien Temple.

Marvin Gaye remains a true icon. Adding a social awareness to soul music, his album 'What's Going On' was released after a battle with Motown boss Berry Gordy and changed black music forever.

Sadly passing away in 1984, the singer's life is a dramatic story torn between strained personal relationships and frequent spells of drug and alcohol dependency.

Now Marvin Gaye's life story could be turned into a new film. Award winning British director Julien Temple is set to steer the project, with the Screen Daily reporting that work is now set to begin.

The title for the project has not yet been decided, although 'Midnight Love' and 'Sexual Healing' have both been mooted.

Rather than focus on his entire life, the film is reportedly set to cover the singer's dramatic comeback. Having been forced out of the music industry due to his drug habit, Marvin Gaye settles in Ostend, Belgium.

Spending the bulk of the early 80s living in Belgium, Marvin Gaye battled his addictions and planned his next move. Getting sober, the singer made a triumphant return to the United States but was soon hooked on cocaine.

The addiction spiralled out of control, forcing Marvin Gaye to return home to his parents. After a final row, the soul icon was shot dead by his own father in 1984.

It is not yet known to what extent the film will dwell on these details, or who could yet be case as Marvin Gaye. Many attempts have been made to turn his life story into a film over the years, with Jean-Luc Van Damme acting as producer.

The film is set to begin shooting in Belgium later this year.
