British hip hop is a strange beast.

Use American slang and be called fake, British slang and be called parochial. It seems that home grown rap crews just can't win - at least, not without a little imagination.

Ghostpoet is signed to Gilles Peterson's imprint Brownswood, and manages to produce an unaffected style of British rap. Growing up in Coventry, the rapper moved to London last year.

Working on his music, Ghostpoet reflected on a childhood which lurched between London, Coventry, Nigeria and Dominica. Never restricting himself to genre, this comes through in the MC's output.

A series of singles last year moved between indie songsmithery, classic rap beats and slices of electronics. Free EP 'The Sound Of Strangers' brought renewed attention, before the recent track 'Cash & Carry Me Home' found attention far beyond the hip hop scene.

The title track of his debut album, the song exemplified Ghostpoet's raw but serene style. His flow is impeccable while the wonky synth line seems to spiral its way into your memory.

A host of producers have tackled the track, with EAN completing our favourite remix. Low slung bass beats, it sits mid-way between dubstep and the stuck-in-honey productions of J Dilla.
