Lupe Fiasco has given a bizarre new interview in which he slaughters his new album 'Lasers'.
Long delayed, Lupe Fiasco's new album 'Lasers' was completed some time ago. Deemed not worthy of release by the label, an unusual fan campaign was started on the internet. An enormous petition sparked the movement, which culminated with a sit in at the offices of the rapper's label.
Now 'Lasers' is finally getting release. Fans are overjoyed, while critics have lauded both the campaign and Lupe Fiasco's continually inventive music.
So is the rapper happy? Erm... not quite. In a new interview with Complex Magazine the Chicago hip hop don slaughters the album, and continually questions his own motivations for writing the material.
Speaking to the magazine, Lupe Fiasco expressed dismay with the material. “I love and hate this album. I listen to it and I’ll like some of the songs. But when I think about what it took to actually get the record together and everything that I went through on this record—which is something I can’t separate—I hate this album.”
Continuing, the rapper explained that there were hints of bitterness left behind by the battle to get 'Lasers' released. “I know the sneaky business deal that went down behind this song, or the artist or singer or songwriter who wrote this hook and didn’t want to give me this song in the first place. So when I have that kind of knowledge behind it, I’m just kind of neutral to it.”
Later, Lupe Fiasco summed up his general feeling about making music. “Whatever. Another song, another day, another dollar.”
Causing immediate uproar, it should be pointed out that Lupe Fiasco also paid tribute to the determination of fans. The (fans) came and put their lives on the line in some instances—because you never know what could happen, it could have been a stampede. I look at that as very inspiring and motivational."
"That was one of the only reasons the label got on the phone and wanted to have that meeting, they seen the outpouring of support and the critique that was beginning to mobilize via the Internet.”
Lupe Fiasco are due to release 'Lasers' on March 7th.
