Slash has defended controversial American actor Charlie Sheen, who is under fire due to his drink and drugs habit.

As the guitarist in Guns N Roses, Slash was part of the most dangerous group on the planet. Rock gods, the band left a trail of destruction in their wake, often prompting riots with late arrivals and no shows.

Alongside this, the band's excess became notorious. Slash led a hardcore party lifestyle for almost a decade, before turning clean and writing his scandalous (and best selling) autobiography.

So Slash knows a thing or two about excess. Which is perhaps why the guitarist has leapt to the defence of controversial American actor Charlie Sheen.

Speaking to Triple M, the guitarist labelled Sheen as "probably the most rock-'n'-roll character in entertainment today."

"I love Charlie," he enthused. "All things considered, he's been having a little bit of a hard time recently with all the bad press and everything. But he's been managing to get away with what he's been doing on that show, and get a raise, over the last more than ten years. I think that's pretty cool."

Charlie Sheen manages to balance an incredible party intake with starring in the highest rated show in the United States. 'Two And A Half Men' is a ratings smash, with the actor playing a pivotal role.

Reflecting on this, Slash emphasised the need to find a balance. "I never did find a balance," he said. "I was probably one of those guys that manage to work and be under the influence on a regular basis. I showed up. I never fell over on stage. I never missed a gig. I finally just got to a point where I was sick and tired of all that."

Despite being supportive of Charlie Sheen, Slash warned that "there is a cap, a point where you can't be productive."
