New York surf-pop outfit The Drums are set to work with former Shangri-Las singer Mary Weiss.

The Drums are deeply indebted to the 60s. The band's joyous surf-pop sound turns the decade inside out, adding a blast of post-punk rhythms to the mixture.

The band's debut album is out now, impressing fans with the sheer zest of their songwriting. But it seems that the New York based outfit are keen to get back in the studio, and have plans to record with a 60s icon.

Mary Weiss might not be a household name, but you have definitely heard her voice. As the lead singer with The Shangri-Las she performed on countless iconic hits, including 'The Leader Of The Pack'.

Long since retired from the music industry, Weiss could be set for a collaboration with The Drums if singer Jonathon Pierce has his way. Speaking to Spinner, the frontman claims that he has made initial enquiries to a partnership with the singer.

"A friend and I had this idea to write an album with her (Mary Weiss), so we tracked her down," he explained. "Turns out she still lives in New York. We haven't met her yet, but we've spoken on the phone. She seems really excited about it. It's a really cool thing."

Continuing, the singer mused on the connection between The Drums and classic 60s pop. "We try to write simple, classic pop melodies, that's what those '60s girl groups did so well. So it makes sense. This is the thing that I'm most excited about."

Meanwhile, The Drums are set to play a special set at Glastonbury this weekend. The band are scheduled to play at the Strummerville campfire, created in honour of legendary Clash frontman Joe Strummer.
