Michael Eavis has said that Irish rock giants U2 could yet make their long awaited appearance at Glastonbury.

Despite enjoying global fame for three decades, U2 have never played Glastonbury. Booked to appear at the event this summer the group were then forced to pull out after singer Bono had an operation on his back.

Replacements Gorillaz played a sensational slot instead, with singer Damon Albarn paying his respects to the Irish group during interviews before the event.

U2 guitarist The Edge appeared onstage with Muse at the Somerset event, playing guitar on a cover version of the pulsating rock classic 'Where The Streets Have No Name'.

Gaining a taste for the Glastonbury atmosphere, Michael Eavis has claimed that U2 would be welcome back - but it may take some time to organise. "He enjoyed the experience and he's had a taste of playing now so I'm sure the band are really keen to do it when it suits them," the genial farmer told BBC News.

The only problem is scheduling - U2 are expected to take a year off in 2011. Tiring of the rigours of the road, the band will take a well deserved break after completing the latest leg of their world tour.

In turn, Glastonbury organisers Michael and Emily Eavis are planning to take a one year break in 2013. So even if U2 agree to come back to Worthy Farm, it won't be for another three years.

Meanwhile, Michael Eavis told the BBC that he had confirmed the headliners for next year's event. Sadly, the organiser refused to name the acts in question but he did rebutt accussations that Glastonbury was now part of the establishment.

"We've been anti-establishment right the way through our history" he explained. "That's why we've succeeded because we've got so many in powerful places locally, councillors, who have got that nonconformist tradition."

This year's Glastonbury festival was an overwhelming success with Motown icon Stevie Wonder closing the event last night (June 28th). The soul star played his greatest hits, moving from the slick pop of his youth to the ground breaking socially conscious music he crafted in the 70s.
