Maverick Danish electronic producer Trentmoller has spoken about his unique approach to music.

The most common criticism of electronic music is that it is un-emotive. "It's made by machines" some argue, "so how can they feel anything?" Well in the hands of Danish guru Trentmoller electronic music has been pitched to extreme levels of emotional intensity.

Returning with his new album 'Into The Great Wide Yonder' the Danish producer has shocked fans with his sudden dark tone. His incessant wandering marks out the musician, whose recordings seem to exist in a world of their own.

The electronic maverick is in a prized position, yet still makes music which drips with sadness. Trentmoller spoke to ClashMusic recently, and revealed that he feels there is just more beauty in melancholy.

"For me there are more layers in the music" he said. "I think it would be quite hard for me just to make a ‘happy-go-lucky’ song just for the sake of it. There are so many more layers in melancholia. It can also be beautiful you know?”

"Some people asked me: ‘What happened? Did you have a nervous breakdown?’” chuckles the Copenhagen-based producer. “Actually I’m doing quite well. But I think maybe if I wasn’t making this kind of music I wouldn’t feel better. For me making music means I can get rid of some of the more darker feelings.”

A recent performance at Iceland Airwaves proved to be a trigger for Trentmoller, who was inspired by the country's incredible landscape.

“Everything looks like you’re on the moon in a way, this big, dramatic powerful space" he explained. "Secondly, I’m living in a really hardcore area in Copenhagen. It’s like the red light district kind of place. It can be dangerous, and, you know, it’s that pulse of the city that inspires me.”
