Fans of 6Music are celebrating after the BBC Trust rejected plans to close down the station.

Founded in 2002, the loyal fan base of 6Music reacted in horror at plans to axe the station. Dedicated to new and left field music, the digital station had earned numerous awards in its eight year run.

However the cost cutting measures sweeping through the BBC meant that the future of 6Music was placed under threat. Any plans to axe the station must be placed before the BBC Trust, which has today (July 5th) rejected the proposals.

Responding the BBC's strategy review, Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons said that the case for the closure of 6Music had not been made.

The BBC Trust is designed to represent the interests of license payers, and argued that it would only consider axing BBC 6Music as part of a much wider review of the organisation's online radio strategy.

The trust's conclusions were: "As things stand, the case has not been made for the closure of 6 Music.

"The Executive should draw up an overarching strategy for digital radio. If the director general wanted to propose a different shape for the BBC's music radio stations as part of a new strategy, the trust would consider it.

Presenter Lauren Laverne logged onto Twitter, telling fans the good news: "6Music has been saved. Hooooorrrayyyyy!"

Meanwhile La Roux singer Elly Jackson claimed that she was "delighted". Speaking to 5Live, she said: "You always feel slightly ignored, like the individual can't have any affect on these things, but when things like this happen you think maybe we can".

However in sad news The Asian Network has been axed. The radio station won numerous awards for its shows, with supporters arguing that it supplied a vital voice for Britain's Asian communities.

Yet this wasn't enough to save it, with the station closing later this year. Elsewhere, proposed cuts for the BBC's online presence were approved with a 25% slash in budget. Teen service Blast! is also a victim under the cost cutting measures.
