Ambient pioneers The Orb have recorded a number of new tracks with Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.
The Orb are one of the most unusual electronic groups around. Formed after the white heat of Acid House has subsided, their glacial soundscapes have continued to break new ground during a 20 year career.
Taking inspiration from some of Pink Floyd's more languid passages, The Orb have taken the logical step and used music crafted by the prog group's guitarist David Gilmour.
The guitarist recorded a number of tracks with producer Youth last year, who handed the material over to The Orb. The group then began using it as the basis for new material, which is due to be released later this year.
Titled 'Metallic Spheres' the new album will be presented by The Orb featuring David Gilmour. A typically mind expanding work, the material will be available from October across the number of formats.
David Gilmour's blog announced that the music will be available in the new 3D60 format. '3 Dimensional Sound' the new technology was "developed by Youth, Mike Brady (The Jam’s live sound engineer) and Ian Thompson (musician and multimedia producer). You don’t need any special equipment to enjoy 3D60™, by the way; it will sound amazing on any headphones in any format."
Alongside the standard CD a series of ambient recordings will be released. Part of an expanded web-only package, the blog reports that the extra material is similar to Gilmour's 'Live In Gdansk'.
In addition to this, 'Metallic Spheres' is set to have a charitable side. David Gilmour has been involved in the battle to help Gary McKinnon fight extradition proceedings being launched against him.
All artist royalties for David Gilmour will be donated to the fund aiming to help Gary McKinnon.
The Orb featuring David Gilmour will released 'Metallic Spheres' in October.
