Scottish post-rock giants Mogwai have signed a new contract with Seattle label Sub Pop.
Mogwai command respect. The band's lengthy back catalogue is one of the most potent in post-rock, inspiring legions of young groups to kick out their vocalist and buy some distortion pedals.
Attracting a cult following far beyond their native Glasgow, Mogwai have an international profile. When their record deal with Matador ran out, a race for the band's signature commenced.
Sub Pop have emerged victorious, with the Seattle label set to release the band's forthcoming album in North America. Work is currently under way on new material, with Mogwai working on their native Glasgow.
ClashMusic caught up with guitarist Barry Burns recently, who explained that the band are set to return to the Chem19 studio in Hamilton - where they recorded their now classic debut album 'Young Team'.
"We’ve been recording for a few weeks with the band now. John has been living in New York for a while and I’ve been in Berlin" he explained.
"Before, we would meet up in Glasgow and write songs together so this is a different way of doing things – sending files to each other over the internet. It’s slightly weird doing it that way but I think it’s going quite well. I mean, we’re only two weeks into it and we’ve only done the drum and bass…not the genre – the instruments!"
The forthcoming material will be handled by the band's own label Rock Action in the UK. The label has grown in strength and stature, with Mogwai recently issuing their concert film 'Burning' on the label.
Meanwhile Japanese fans will be able to purchase the new album courtesy of the Hostess label.
Mogwai are due to release their new album in 2011.
