Hugely influential songwriter Will Oldham has given a masterclass in bizarre interviews, slating Bill Gates in the process.
A true outlaw songwriter, Will Oldham pretty much does what he likes. From The Palace Brothers through to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, the American artist has done things on his own terms, releasing some seminal music in the process.
Recently disappearing from view, Will Oldham has given a bizarre new interview. Speaking to the Fogged Clarity podcast, the singer performed a few Palace Brothers favourites before waxing lyrical about the world today.
Moving from topic to topic, Will Oldham's logic is as surreal as it is striking. Asked about Bill Gates, the singer insisted that the hugely wealthy Microsoft founder "doesn't really want people to live".
"I want to eradicate cholera, so I can get another motherfucker to buy my computer. That's why he wants people to live: because if people are alive they have money to spend and they will buy his fucking computer" Oldham ranted. "He doesn't really want people to live. He loves people because they have made him wealthy beyond every human being's wildest imagination. That's why he loves people."
Continuing, Will Oldham was asked about the practice of songwriting. In a bizarre analogy the American artist compared songcraft to staring at a young lady's bottom...
"Making records is commerce, and it's about fooling yourself as a writer and a performer and fooling the audience into not thinking about it and accepting it. It's like when you walk down the street, and you say, "Look at that girl's ass, it's so great." You're ignoring also the fact that she farts and shits out of that ass. It's the same kind of thing."
Oh-kayyyy....
