More than a decade after it began releasing electronic music, Cologne's Kompakt still reigns supreme.
Just one of the reasons why Germany's club scene is in such fighting health, Kompakt's shimmering minimal style has define techno cool for over ten years. Lynch pin Thomas Fehlmann has led the way.
With their recent 'Pop Ambient' compilation gaining renewed kudos, Kompakt shows no signs of slowing down. Gaining in ambition, the label recently commissioned a work of near orchestral scope.
Thomas Fehlmann has always had the air of the grandiose on his productions, adding a much wider musical palette than the flicks and clicks of most minimal cuts. The producer was invited to team up with Montreal Symphony Orchestra last year, and responded with some typically striking ideas.
Initially performed live, the music has now made its way onto vinyl. The partnership tackled a number of established classical works, notably Gustav Mahler's 'Symphony No.1 (Titan)'.
An Austrian composer, Mahler bridged the gap between the late Romantic period and the birth of Modernism. Unafraid to tackle new ideas, the composer never lost sight of the emotional scope his work should have.
Sound familiar? 'Titan One' is out now (in limited numbers) on Kompakt.
