All of a sudden, indie is back.
After a few years in the doledrums, the sounds of classic indie pop are ringing across the nation. A new breed of songwriter has dug out their copy of 'The Glasgow School' and is beginning to find inspiration.
In Sunderland, Frankie & The Heartstrings do it better than most. A series of singles on their own PopSex imprint created a cult following, with the band seeming like a self-contained industry.
Working with Edwyn Collins, sessions for their debut album stretched throughout last year. Honing their live sound, the results contain all the energy of a show by Frankie & The Heartstrings.
Except in your stereo, obviously. Out this week, 'Hunger' is named after the cult novel by Norwegian writer Knut Hamsen which focusses on the desperate desire to create. Recently getting a massive tattoo of Edwyn Collins on his body, this seems to be something singer Frankie Francis can relate to.
Packed full of arch indie gems, ClashMusic have picked 'Possibilities' as our latest 'Track Of The Day'. With bristling guitars and a taut vocal, the song recalls the wit of Orange Juice mixed with the energy of The Cribs.
