New York producer FaltyDL has spoken about the impact of rave culture on his new album 'You Stand Uncertain'.
Mixing cut up garage beats with distorted vocal samples, FaltyDL established himself as one of the more forward thinking bass producers working in the United States. Returning with his new album 'You Stand Uncertain' the beatsmith seems determined to turn the clock back.
Infused with the spirit and energy of the rave era, certain tracks have an explicit sonic debt to the era of Reese basslines and amen breaks. A joyous, uplifting album FaltyDL has cranked up the tempo on a typically diverse release.
Speaking to Pitchfork, FaltyDL mused on the impact rave has had an on his music, despite discovering the cuts second hand. "Why do I love rave and a period that I never actually experienced first hand?" he asked. "The process of writing music and the outcome is important to me, but the journey and figuring out why I am compelled by a certain sound is more important. The journey outweighs the product."
"I was and am still incredibly excited by early-90s hardcore, mid-90s jungle, and even further back, late-80s rave and house music. I think they have a place still in today's music, if you don't know it, you're still hearing music that is influenced by it. It's also just really dark music. Highly emotive, but incredibly danceable."
Due to be released on Planet Mu, 'You Stand Uncertain' is fantastic step forward from the New York producer. Each track seems to hand together, giving the feeling of a complete document rather than - as is so often the case in dance music - a collection of in demand tracks.
"What is more interesting, timeless music or music which encapsulates a certain time and scene?" he wondered. "I spent a lot of time listening to albums this past year. Not so much singles. To get the feel of a long player back in my head. That is so important when making an album."
The interview is part of Blackdown's regular features on bass culture. Required reading for anyone with an interest in electronic music, additional material is often posted on his blog.
FaltyDL is due to release 'You Stand Uncertain' on March 21st.
