Trent Reznor has sensationally walked away with the Oscar for 'Best Original Score'.
As the main figure behind Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor became known for producing relentless industrial music. Informed by his addictions and self-loathing, the band's music never quite gained acceptance from the mainstream.
However Trent Reznor's blossoming soundtrack career could hardly be different. Helping to create the deft, imaginative score behind 'The Social Network' the songwriter was showered with praise.
Given 'The Golden Globe' for 'Best Original Score' the one time industrial icon was named as one of the favourites at this year's Academy awards. Now Trent Reznor has managed to do just that, waltzing away with an Oscar.
Announced as the winner, Trent Reznor looked visibly shocked. During his acceptance speech the songwriter asked the audience: "Wow. Is this really happening?"
"When we finished work on 'The Social Network,' we were very proud of our work and happy to just be involved in this film, and to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words."
Talking to press backstage, the songwriter struggled to compose himself and reflect on what had just happened. "A side of my music with Nine Inch Nails was going instrumental so it was not a huge leap or stretch to try this," Reznor said of his first venture into the field of film soundtracks.
"The biggest challenge was working with a picture. (Director) David Fincher knew exactly what he wanted. It was one of the best experiences of my life from start to finish."
Elsewhere, Randy Newman won the Oscar for 'Best Original Song'. The American songwriting legend wrote 'We Belong Together' for 'Toy Story 3D' which became one of the most successful animated films of all time.
