Indie icon Carl Barat has claimed that he has been writing new material for the forthcoming Libertines re-union shows.

The Libertines are one of the most influential British acts of the past ten years. The quartet came, saw, didn't much fancy conquering before finally splitting in 2004 after releasing just two studio albums.

Since then the band have re-united only a handful of times. Last year the group got back together for a charity show at their old stomping ground of the Rhythm Factory in London's Shoreditch area.

Now The Libertines have confirmed high profile slots at Reading and Leeds. The band are planning something special for fans, with Carl Barat recently revealing that he has been working on new material.

Speaking to the NME, the singer explained that he intends to send Pete Doherty a potential track for the band. "We haven't done any preparation yet, apart from being in touch," Barat said.

"I'm sending Pete a song, I must email that today – maybe we'll do something with that."

Meanwhile, Carl Barat has been working on his debut solo album. The material is entirely acoustic, with the indie icon previewing new tracks during a handful of British solo dates last year.

The indie star performed at Glastonbury on Friday (June 25th) rushing through a batch of solo material. "It feels totally different – essentially it's a lot more selfish" he explained. "It comes from the heart and it's a different sound".

Carl Barat is set for a busy summer, with the singer set to appear at Latitude introducing the new documentary 'The Rime Of The Modern Mariner' - which he himself narrated. Meanwhile his debut solo album is due to be released at the end of this year.

Reading and Leeds takes place between August 27th - 29th.
