The National singer Matt Berninger was taken into custody recently after trying to board a flight with a clock shaped like a bomb.

With the daily threat of terrorism, airport security has been increased around the world. Sure, some rights have been impinged upon the laws are there for the greater good.

But sometimes, just sometimes, an incident occurs which is so daft it brings the entire situation into focus. The National's Matt Berninger was recently at the centre of an airport evacuation, after buying a clock shaped like a bomb.

That's right - he wanted to take a ticking bomb onto an airplane. Something tells us he should have thought this through...

Speaking to Spinner, the singer explained that he was about to board a plane for his "first official family vacation" after a long trip overseas working with the band. "I had bought a novelty clock in Tokyo, some sort of MacGyver, goofball alarm clock that happened to look exactly like a bomb" he explained. I had the Honolulu Airport evacuated for about 45 minutes".

"Suddenly I hear my name being called and my name's flashing on all the monitors, and I was supposed to report to security," he said.

"I was kind of hoping that maybe I could finish this 15-minute massage chair thing first then realized that maybe I shouldn't."

Hauled into the security office, The National singer was told that the airport was being evacuated. Realising his mistake, Berninger hauled the comedy clock out of his bags and gave it to staff.

"I ultimately had to surrender the alarm clock to the TSA but they were very pleasant and professional," said the singer. "They had done a great job and I thanked them and they let me go."

The National recently played Glastonbury, proving that Matt Berninger has put the ordeal behind him. Let's hope he doesn't spot any more trinkets...
