Paul McCartney joined Ringo Starr onstage recently to help celebrate the drummer's 70th birthday.

Much overlooked, Ringo Starr had an extremely important role in The Beatles. Sure, his primitive drumming may not have advanced the art of rhythm but his steady beat anchored the group's songwriting.

Extremely flexible, it is his drum rolls which propel 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Later turning solo, the drummer was always held in high regard by his band mates.

Turning 70 at the weekend, Ringo Starr organised a special one off show. An enormous party, the drummer took over New York's Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday (July 7th) for a star studded show.

Ringo Starr helmed the house band, while a raucous rendition of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' saw the likes of Joe Walsh, Angus Young, Nils Lofgren, Foreigner's Mick Jones and more join in.

The stage was cleared, with some members of the crowd taking this as a cue for the show being over. Just as they were making their way to the exits a roadie appeared bearing Paul McCartney's iconic Hofner bass.

Paul McCartney then ran onto the stage to blast through a special version of 'Birthday' with Ringo Starr playing drums. The set list contained a number of Beatles classics alongside the Edgar Winter Band's 'Free Ride' and 'Frankenstein'.

The pair are not adverse to re-uniting onstage, with their last appearance together coming at a New York benefit in 2009. The duo also launched 'Rock Band: The Beatles' last year. Both have been busy of late with Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney playing a number of festival dates.

McCartney recently performed at the Isle Of Wight festival, before heading to London for the Hard Rock Calling event.

Happy Birthday Ringo!
