Manic Street Preachers bass player Nicky Wire has revealed that he is working on a potential Doctor Who script.
Manic Street Preachers have led a long and at times bizarre career. The band began life as outrageous punks, mixing revolutionary rhetoric with mascara half-inched from their mum's make up box.
Now the grand old men of Welsh rock, the trio are planning to return with their new album 'Postcards From A Young Man' later this year. Organising a mammoth UK arena tour, the group could be set for a visit from Doctor Who.
Huge fans of the series, the band are working on a script for the series. It is highly unlikely that the script, even if it is completed, will ever be commissioned by hey - we can dream.
Writing on his blog Nicky Wire told fans that he has been working on an episode named 'Do Not Go Gently'. Typically, it has a literary background, taking its name from one of the final poems written by Welsh writer Dylan Thomas.
"The idea is centred around Dylan Thomas' last days in New York," he wrote. "Of course, it's going to have a massive fucking monster in it too."
Meanwhile, Nicky Wire also claimed that the new album would be a widescreen, hugely orchestrated work. "There are loads of strings on this record. I think the best strings that have ever been recorded are on Ocean Rain. Everything Must Go has been a big influence on us – we always look inwards to our own records when we record."
"The idea that melancholia and rage can be harnessed into something euphoric – that’s the key to some of our best records. They’re angry but they lift you up. The Beatles have been a big influence, it’s the first time we’ve given in to them, Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road have been a huge influence. Primal Scream’s Dixie Narco period – the idea of adding a slight modernity to a classic sound. Paul Weller’s Wake Up The Nation. Sometimes it feels like he’s the only one able to have a critical eye. The lack of new bands with anything to say makes it feel more and more like he’s the only eye surveying the universe."
