This month, Kye Sones from Diagram Of The Heart on his appreciation of street art.
“I’ve always been interested in art, especially street art. When we are writing, I’m always doodling, as it helps me come up with lyrics. I don’t do much street art because I’m involved in music 24/7, but it’s nice to be a spectator.
There’s always new graffiti popping up in Ladbroke Grove, London. Banksy was one of the first ones there. It’s like a big open gallery; every time you walk down the road, there’s a new piece. The council’s pretty good; they just leave them up.
There was a wicked exhibition at Christmas called One Foot In The Grove, full of sculptures and street art. They made the underneath of the A40 into a massive gallery. It was amazing. One guy did a wicked picture of the Queen on a stamp, but she was crying, as it was around the time of economic crisis.
Art is something that creates an opinion, whether it is negative or positive. With graffiti, people either love it or hate it, and that’s what art is about
I hate tagging. There was an amazing piece of an Irish poet on Portobello Road that had been there for years, but last year kids tagged over it.
I don’t think street artists get enough recognition. If it’s on a wall, people just look at it and say it’s vandalism. I think the skill involved is amazing.”
