The shortlist of 12 'Albums of the Year 2010' in the running to win the prestigious Mercury Prize to be revealed, the overall winner will be announced in September.

Broadcaster and presenter Lauren Laverne is set to reveal the Barclaycard Mercury Prize ‘2010 Albums of the Year’ shortlist on 20th July, hosted by The Hospital Club, Covent Garden. The Mercury Prize celebrates and recognises music in the UK, having a reputation for highlighting both established bands and artists, and new talent. Albums released between July 2009 and July 2010 are eligible for the prize. An independent judging panel, including musicians, producers, presenters and music journalists, choose the shortlist of 12 ‘Albums of the Year’ – the decision based solely on the music rather than commercial sales success.

Previous winners include Speech Debelle (2009), Elbow (2008) and the Klaxons (2007). It’s an exciting time for musicians, Laverne stating ‘There have been loads of great albums released over the last year, so it’ll be fascinating to see who makes the final shortlist of twelve. I can’t wait to reveal the line-up to the nation in July’.

Though the shortlist of twelve finalists will be announced in July, the overall prize-winner will be revealed at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show on September 7th. The show will be broadcast live on BBC 2, Lauren Laverne presenting the programme whilst Jools Holland will host the show itself.
